Bring your beloved fish, lizards, turtles, felines, and feathered and furry friends to Assumption Catholic School in O’Fallon for a prayer service and Blessing of the Pets, Friday, Oct. 7. The invocation gets underway at 11:30 a.m. as students, their families, and the community gather in the Certified Nature Explore Classroom in honor of their pets. Even Crusader, the school’s mascot and therapy dog will be there! Owners with pets of all sizes and species are welcome to attend. Pets must be safely secured or leashed upon arrival. Participants may bring a photo of their pet if that is more convenient.
The annual pet blessing occurs every October at Assumption School in commemoration of Saint Francis of Assisi’s love of all creatures. Deacon Richard Tadlock will preside over this year’s 30-minute celebration. As the prayer is offered, each pet will be gently sprinkled with Holy Water during the ceremony. The service will close with an uplifting hymn of “All Creatures of our God and King,” which is based on a poem written by Saint Francis of Assisi himself. If there is inclement weather on the day of the event, the pet blessing will be moved inside the school gymnasium, located at 203 West Third Street.
