We are excited to announce our first Montessori primary classroom beginning in the fall of 2019-2020.
We are keeping the size of the class low; enrollment is limited to only ten children, ages three to six. We plan to increase enrollment the following year to ensure the Montessori approach is embedded in the classroom. What is Montessori and is it right for your child?
Here are a few hallmarks you will notice in a Montessori classroom:
It fosters independence-
You will notice a three year old sweeping the floor with a child-sized broom, washing the dishes at a sink which is set for their height or folding the laundry. The pride you see in these children who are able to “do it themselves” without asking for help from an adult is incredible. The materials were created to be self-correcting which means students can identify a mistake in their thinking without having an adult point it out to them. Students in a Montessori classroom then have the power to ask for help when they need it. As they mature, students learn to look critically at their work, and become adept at recognizing, correcting, and learning from their errors.
Children grasp the idea of “why”-
Students will understand the how and the why when using Montessori materials. Students can actually see a division problem occur as he or she divides each place value. They also have the ability to practice it over and over with the materials until it makes sense to them.
It meets children where they are-
Montessori education recognizes that children learn in different ways, and accommodates all learning styles. Students are also free to learn at their own pace, each advancing through the curriculum as he is ready, guided by the teacher and an individualized learning plan.
Students are part of a close, caring community. The multi-age classroom—typically spanning 3 years—re-creates a family structure. Older students enjoy stature as mentors and role models; younger children feel supported and gain confidence about the challenges ahead. Teachers model respect, loving kindness, and a belief in peaceful conflict resolution.
